{Viking Gaels Hurling} Viking Gaels --- hurling out look 2014 - update

Howya
At the moment we re concentrating on the hurling..when things are up and running ,ill turn attention to camogie.
There is a new camogie officer so ill be working with her to raise the profile of camogie in the nordics
If u have players there though and they are willing to travel to get game time,ill make sure they will be accomodated on teams on tournament day....
Schedule for tournaments going out soon for 2014..

Hi Billy,
One of the girls here was asking me at the weekend there if there were any similar plans in place for Camogie?
I guess there's not?  One thing at a time I suppose and everything I've seen so far has mentioned hurling only ...

{Viking Gaels Hurling} Viking Gaels --- hurling out look 2014

Hello all
After a very successful convention last week, the path is now set for the Viking Gaels to make their introduction to European hurling championship.
I have fought hard on the behalf of everybody and have instigated the introduction of a B championship next year.This will mean the first round of the hurling championship ( which has been provisionally marked down for April 12 2014 in The Hague in Holland) will be a developmental concept with the following :
a)Teams like Dresden,Cologne,Dussledorf,Rome and the Viking Gaels playing in their own championship with either a 7's or 9 a side format )
b)there will be a foundation level skills coaching course ( given by myself or a marquee Leinster  GAA coach ) that weekend so the fundamentals and basic skills of the game can be learned
c) Depending on its success , the following round could see the introduction of a developmental side into the A championship.

So start planning.... The Hague is a definite first location ,, just the date in April needs to be confirmed ..
I have also created a European hurling equipment fund.On Viking gaels behalf, I have provisionally requested 5 helmets which will be given to the team for nothing or at a very reduced price.
Please come back to me soonest as i dont want the lack of helmets to be a roadblock to our development.
Cmon the Hurlers in the nordics !!!
Lets start pulling hard !!!

Rule Changes (Men's football)

A chara

From January 1st, 2014, a range of new, and/or amended, rules will apply in all football games.

Players, managers, coaches and others should familiarise themselves with these changes. A useful video explaining these changes is available here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1PUAgnrJR_4

The changes are also outlined on the GAA Learning & Development portal, here: http://learning.gaa.ie/referee

Referees will be supplied with additional training and information in coming weeks.

Concussion Guidelines

The nature of Gaelic games is such that occasionally players receive injuries which may lead to concussion. In recent times, the medical profession has learned that concussion is a much more serious injury, with potential long-term effects, than has often been realised.
The GAA has now adopted new guidelines on handling suspected cases of concussion or indeed any head injury. These guidelines are available here: http://www.gaa.ie/medical-and-player-welfare/injuries/concussion-management/ along with a range of other resources such as a poster which can be printed out and used in dressingrooms and club facilities.

Please bring these guidelines to the attention of players, managers, coaches and first aid personnel in your club.

Review of year / convention outcomes / finances /AGM

Hello all
As we look forward to our end of year festivities , we can look back on a proud and eventful 2013 and we look forward to the challenges ahead for 2014.
Convention Outcomes
Last weekend I attended the Euro GAA convention in belgium.the motions and changes to european  competition will be sent in the next week or so but what it will mean is no change to our current Scandinavian cship for mens and Ladies but there will be a Nordic Open ( basically a shield championship with teams from all over Europe - due to be held in late August for both men and women..) There will be no Ireland based competitions next year.
For the ladies, there will be a representative Europe side so i strongly advise our ladies to keep this in mind.I will have more updates at the AGM in January so keep this in mind....
I have dealt with hurling developments in a different mail .....
Finances

I know this should be covered at the AGM in January and as such timing is everything but there is an issue which needs to be addressed.Out of the 30 registered club members, only 10 have paid membership this year.This has left a huge shortfall in our finances and as a result,we have a substantial bill still outstanding from one of our suppliers.This has given me such sleepless nights that the club may have to take out a short term loan to remedy this situation.I am saying at this stage that we need a treasurer to be appointed for 2014 soonest... its too much on its own and ive tried to manage as best i can.( my own fault but we are where we are! )
Allied to this , it looks like we wont have a title sponsor next year either.This really leaves us in a quandry.Therefore, I am in the process of having a meeting with Estrella Sverige with a view to sponsoring both us and the Nordic Championship next year.This hopefully will take place before christmas.I will keep you updated .
AGM
To be held in mid-January.Date and venue and agenda to come later .
Looking forward to seeing you all Saturday night !!!

Hi Lads.
Can I just send you the link to the event website. Www.oslosantaskirun.com
If you guys run another Santa fundraising event of any kind we can post the photos up on all the websites and Facebook pages. Create a bit of off season banter. Ideally we are looking for a sponsor to agree to giving 5 or 10 euro to the fundraiser for each Santa that appears with a bee for battens logo in the picture.

Thanks for the help guys.

GAA Mouthguard Information

PLEASE SEE IMPORTANT NOTICE BELOW regarding mouthguards (gum shields) whoch must be worn by every player from January 2014.

Tony
Tom: Please notify referees as players may be sent off for not wearing same
Thank you!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Do: Gach Rúnaí Contae
A chara,
As you are aware, since January 1st 2013, it has been mandatory for players in Grades up to and including Minor to use a mouthguard in all Football Games and Practice Football Sessions. (Riail 4.3, T.O. Part 2, 2012).  From January 1st 2014, it will be mandatory for all players to use a mouthguard.
The attached document has been compiled to assist GAA Clubs, players, parents, coaches and referees in complying with the provisions of the rule.
I’d be grateful if you would circulate this information to your Clubs / County team management personnel and place an emphasis on the following key points:
Gaelic footballers in all age grades must wear a mouthguard from January 1st 2014
A properly fitted mouthguard is the best available protective device for reducing the incidence and severity of sports-related dental injuries
Players can be sent-off in a game for not wearing a mouthguard
Players will not be covered under the GAA player injury scheme if they don’t comply with the mouthguard rule
7s match report - w3
W3:
Some big hitters were missing from tonights third and final round of the Gothenburg GAA interprovincials, and Munster made their experienced team count to drag themselves back into contention for the overall title.
They were fast out of the blocks against Leinster, racking up a huge win 3-10 to 0-5, a fourteen point difference. Connacht had four players who never played the game before, and couldn't put it up to the southerners, running out losers 4-2 to 1-1.
At the end of this game, that left the standing at Leinster and Munster with three wins each and Connacht on two. Munsters scoring difference was +23 points, Leinsters was -18 and Connachts was -8. That meant that Connacht were effectively out unless they won by 31 points, but still had a lot to say about wher the title would go in the final match.
In the end Leinster combined more clinical finishing with cynical fouling to run out 2-5 to 1-2 winners, taking the overall title.
Congratulations to Leinster on the title, thanks to everyone who showed up so we could get three teams out each night, and welcome back to all those players who tried the sport for the first time. What a great way to cap the year, and we'll definitely be doing this again at the start of next season. We can't leave Leinster on top for long.
Thanks Eoin Ó Broin for the idea and the drive to realise it.
7s match report - w1
W1:
Connacht ran into an early lead at the Gothenburg GAA Inter-provincial seven-a-side this evening. In the first match they took on favourites Leinster and the goals just flowed. The end score was 6-4 to 3-6 in favour of the westerners.
Next up was a tight, low-scoring affair against Munster, with a one point victory 6 points to five. Neither team had their scoring boots, but Connacht dominated possession.
Leinster took the spoils in the last game of the evening. 2-7 to 1-09 was the final score here, Munster going down by one point once more.
The victorious Connacht team was Adrian Kelly, Bradley Crane, Daniel Buschor, Moises Rodriguez, Paul Curley, Madeleine Mann and Erik Wargh.
Next week the action will hotten up, when round two of three will take place at Kviberg.
Up the West and feck the rest!
Stockholm 14th sept
Hi all,
Just a quick mail to put the feelers out there to see who would be interested in this tournament in Stockholm weekend of 14th sept.
Billy was informing us that it's Stockholm and Malmö that  are playing. I personally would love to get a Gothenburg team up there to finish the season off.
Regarding the Ladies, I'm sure there is a ladies game planned up there and if we can get our girls up to either join in with them or on the unlikely event that we get a full ladies team to travel, they could make a team to play in their own tournament .
To cut to the chase, I'm tryin to find out who'd be willin to travel up. No point going with 4 or 5 people. But if we got 10/11 it'd be worth the trip.
If billy can find out what the exact running order is up there, and get back to me.
It's only 3 weekends away so people would have to make a commitment in the next week at the latest, in order to book hostels,  transport and the like.
I'll leave it with yee.
Billy might shed a bit more light on it over the weekend.
Later guys
Mal.
P.s. anyone not on this email list, spread the word!
Draw for ladies and men - estonia
Hi all,
Please find attached draw for ladies and men.
Regarding men Copenhagen made suggestion to shorten games as playing
so many games it might be tiring.
I discussed it with Colin (CCO) and Shay (ref) and we could reduce
time for quarter and semi finals to 10 min a side if you all agree.
(A-B group games will be 12,5min a side and finals 15 min) If you
don´t agree then we can have changes on that on Saturday morning.
Anyway timeschedule won´t change.
Please notice that both football pitches are with artificial grass.
Pitch dimensions for men is 90 x 45m. So it is not that perfect as we
wanted but we hope that the size of the pitch doesn´t make the games
and tournament less enjoyable.
If you want to order taxi to get to the pitch then here is the webpage
that has all the offical taxis and their pricelists
http://www.taksod.net/index.php?la=en.
And please take some cash if you want to use sauna and swimming pool
on Saturday. Entrance to swimming pool and sauna costs 4 euros.
If you have any questions or thoughts ask it or share it :)
Otherwise see you on Friday evening or on Saturday morning.
Subject: Tournament in Tallinn - Accommodation and few questions
Hi all,
I know that most of you are having nice summer holiday. But only few
weeks left to Tallinn tournament and as we would like to offer you all
the good things that we have here we would like to get answers from
you to the following questions:
1) How many people (ladies and men) are coming to Tallinn?
2) Are you coming on Friday evening or on Saturday morning (could you
already specify time if possible)?
 Please reply to me latest on Monday 8.07.2013
Another thing is that this year we are still trying to get good
accommodation offers but due to Robbie Williams concert on 20th august
it is really hard although there are lot of places still available.
Just to be on the safe side please start looking accommodation. We
will come back to you next week, if we have something to offer you.
 If you have questions please do not hesitate to ask :)
World Mini Games GAA 7s - Cork, Ireland
Good Afternoon,
I hope preparations are going well for the tournaments this weekend!
It's our biggest weekend in terms of playing activity, and we have
already received media coverage in Ireland and locally.
Any photos from the weekend would be appreciated, please forward them
to our PRO Brian (pro.europe@gaa.ie) as some articles will be
appearing in National papers next week and we have been requested to
provide good quality shots. Please also provide us with scores and
results so they can be published ASAP.
As regards the forwarded mail below, clubs are invited to express
interest directly to the organisers. This event has no European GAA
input, so clubs enter on their own prerogative/expense.
Enjoy the weekend!
A chairde,
It is a pleasure to reach out to the pioneers of Gaelic Games in
Europe.  Being a Ballincollig GAA man myself, married to a Polish
woman, and with every possibility i might end over there someday, its
great to know that I can keep involved, though might have to set up
the first team in Poznan rather than regularly trekking over to Cumann
Warszawa.
My name is James O'Reilly and I am the Chairperson of the World Mini
Games, which will take place in Cork from the 23rd to the 25th of
August.  The Games, as the title suggests, are based around the
reduced format versions of adult sports, so rugby 7s, hockey 8s,
football 5 a-side etc, and there are over 30 different sports involved
so far.  We are also delighted to be hosting a Gaelic Games 7s
competition, which will be aimed at Junior level adult teams (or
equivalent) only.
The Games have been developed to give the non-elites of the world the
opportunity to take part in a large, City-wide sports event, and to
give those taking part the feeling of taking part in an Olympics or a
World Championships.  In GAA terms we are delighted to have all the
relevant backing from the various Boards, and now it is time to drive
on with the invitations.
We have more visually appealing flyers to follow, but I was hoping you
might already spread the word that the Games are taking place as no
doubt people are already making travel plans for the summer and if at
all possible mark it in your calendar, as it is an event open to many
teams under the auspices of the European Board.
All the tournaments will take place on the Saturday and Sunday, split
between UCC, CIT and Ballincollig pitches.  There will round robin
games on the Saturday and all teams will go through to a knock-out
competition on the Sunday, the level depending on their league table
finish on the Saturday.  The tournaments will also be split into
Junior A, B and possibly C, to give all Clubs a genuine and
competitive opportunity of winning a World title.
Registration to take part in the Games can be done here:
http://worldminigames2013.eventbrite.ie/ however, as this is the year
of the Gathering, indeed the Games are an official flagship Gather
Street Games 16-18/8 - lite viktig info!
Hallå gänget!
Hoppas er sommar har börjat bra! Själv har mitt sommarlov börjat med
en lättare hjärnskakning då jag fick en ful tackling i ryggen under
Svenska cupen, men allt e ok och dags och börja träna stenhårt inför
kommande European Cup i Dublin i augusti.
Vill bara skicka ut lite info innan alla försvinner på semestrar och liknade.
Fångarna på Kviberg blev inställt. Synd för det hade vart skitskoj!
Däremot så kör vi nya tag inför Kulturkalaset och Street Games. Detta
är ett evenemang som kommer att vara på heden 2 16-18 augusti
kl.10-16. Det kommer att spelas cuper i streetfotboll, innebandy o
basket. Vi kommet att köra prova på verksamhet och vi kommer att dela
upp tiderna så att varje klubb får cirka en timma per dag. Men jag
räknar med att alla kan annars får ni höra av er snarast!
Något som alla bör göra är att lägga upp de banners som jag bifogar på
era hemsidor och på facebook etc. Vi behöver hjälpa till att sprida
ryktet om detta fräcka evenemang. Så var snälla och gör detta snarast.
Street Games undrar också om det är möjligt att kanske spela in ett
kort filmklipp från varje klubb, hör av er om detta skulle funka för
er.
Kolla också in http://streetgames.se/sponsorerpartners/ där era loggor
ligger uppe på deras sida.
Mvh
This week and other news
Hi all
Now that our bodies are beginning to recover from last weekend, I just
want to say what a privilege it was to be with and battled with you
all through the day,
It was one of the best weekends ever in our proud history and goes to
show what can be achieved with collective will.!!!!
However, we c'ant rest on our laurels.... we have our own tournament
coming up in the next few weeks with alot of work to be done.
Malmo ( mens & ladies ) / Stockholm ( mens and ladies ) / Oslo and
ourselves  ( mens and ladies ) have confirmed their attendance.
No show from Helsinki / Tailinn / Copenhagen this year ( although Cph
are still 50/50 as to whether they will send a mens or ladies team.
A file will be sent out with delegation of tasks but what needs to be
done asap and to draw a crowd is a poster advertising the day.Can
someone do up one quickly so we can put one up in both Dubs , other
pubs and sports halls ?
Otherwise, we will have training this Thursday at pitch 17 in Kviberg
at 6.30pm.we will have at least one new male and maybe a few new
females... its not long to go.Please try and come!
Gothenburg abu !!!!!
Training and general state of affairs
Hello all
Just a quick note to inform you of training next Sunday the 21st
midday at Slottskogen ( carpark by Belparc ) .Your attendance is
required  - its too close to cship to be fannying about and we need to
see who s serious about being in the team this year.........
We are just 5 weeks away from championship and to say we need to pull
the finger out is an understatement.Talking of Malmo, can you please
confirm your intention to travel or not asap by texting me or Paul or
Kevin or replying to this mail.Accomodation is still not booked as
only a few people have said they are.
Likewise, the ladies team this year , despite all good intentions at
the start of the year , is looking very likely not to be a goer this
year.Nobody is showing up for training ( except Madde ) and if we are
to get new players , we need to get them sharpish.Otherwise, we 'll
just join with Malmo / Cph which is what we do not want at all.....
Outdoor training starts week 18 in Kviberg  so please lets drive on , eh !!!!
Viking Gaels in 2013
Ok lads,
It's time to crap or get off the pot :-D
We are all well aware of the potential here in the Nordics for hurling, we have a handful of fellas, even ladies in every club so I guess our main issues have been logistics and in a way competition with football.
Myself and Billy have been discussing ideas about how to get it going so we've decided to plan a Scandinavian 7's tournament to be held in Gothenburg (mid to late July - possibly the weekend of the 20th/21st.)
This would be a great opportunity for us to properly get together over a weekend, the idea being we train/play together before heading to our first tournament, with the aim being the final round in Brussels on August 3rd.
We'll get back to you shortly with a confirmed date but we'll be aiming for the date above.
Naturally if there are Camogie players we'll certainly accommodate them too.
Any thoughts/preferences??
Club secretaries,
Please pass this on to all club members.......there might be a few more closet hurlers/camogie players in your ranks.
Please bring to attention of all hurlers in your your club.
Hello all
Just to remind you that due to promotional and committee requirements from the organisers , we were hoping to have some  names of attendees within the next 3 weeks.
So please get on to your members to declare their interest and intentions.This is a fabulous oppurtunity for us all involved in European  hurling.
Hello all
Hope I find you all well.
Recently I canvassed interest from all European clubs in declaring their interest to send non-Irish national members of their hurling clubs to the International Hurling tournament in Galway in September this year.The response was well-received and to date 18 players have indicated their interest and intention to travel to Ireland in September.
Now its the turn of our Irish nationals who play throughout Europe to declare their interest and intentions to participate in this fantastic tournament - a splendid chance to showcase to the world that hurling in Europe is vibrant and strong.
What we re looking for is Irish born members of all hurling clubs in Europe to nominate players from their club.The panel will be made up of 21 players With such a broad and varied pick of hurling members and clubs to chose from , a quota system per club may have to be put in place.However, this is all relavent to who and how many players declare their interest.Also, there will be a requirement to attend one mandatory training session at the last hurling round this year mainly to  a / establish the panel b/ inform players of the logistics involved.
The bonus for the players picked on the panel is an all - expenses paid trip ( flights and accomodation ) to Galway at the end of september and a chance to play against world opposition on a world stage.The format of the competition will be establised closer to the time with the finals being played in Pearse Stadium in Galway.
If you ve any questions , please let me know
{Viking Gaels Hurling} Viking/Nordic Hurling in 2013
Happy New Year to ye all lads.
We return to the mission of forming our hurling team in 2013. I know we've talked about it a bit last year and got a bit of communication going, but I'd really like to give it another push in 2013.
On a whim the other day I made a last minute bid to host a round of the 2013 Hurling & Camogie Championships in Malmo in order to try and stimulate both our own and European focus on hurling in the region.
Whilst the bid was appreciated it was sadly shot down by the powers at be, due to the failure of the Budapest experiment a few years ago, as Budapest hosted a round but failed to turn up to any other rounds.
A new rule has now been put in place that potential hosts must play in 2 rounds of the previous years Championship, which personally I believe kills the whole impetus of what we are trying to do.
Nevertheless, I don't believe that will put a stop to us.
Billy Finn (Gothenburg) is the new European Hurling Officer so we have local support to get us off the ground in 2013.
Yes we are well aware of the time and money constraints involved in playing a second sport.
Most of our clubs have small numbers of hurlers or a number of small hurlers :-D and we have even found some non-club members willing to hurl.
So I'd like to ask the following of all clubs:
•Please forward this message to all your club members
•Club committees to consider allocating a small proportion of your budget to hurling in 2013 to help club members with expenses if possible.
•Any interested Hurlers AND Camogie players to contact me and we'll add them to the Viking Gaels mailing list.
•Join the Facebook group Viking Gaels
•Consider having some sort of Hurling meet in the region early in the season.
Billy is now also a Master Tutor so perhaps we could have a mini coaching/7's weekend.
When we have all interested players accounted for we'll create an equipment register to see what we have in regards to weaponry and helmets and possibly approach our good friend the Hurling Officer for a grant of some sorts.
Rumour also has it that Lahti Hurling Club in Finland are making a comeback so there is ample opportunity for us to make 2013 a successful launch of the Viking Gaels.
Please feel free to contact me
St Patricks Night Party
What a night!!Thanks to all who contributed on the night and made it such a memorable occasion and a great success.Big thanks goes out to Kevin ( organising the whole event and cooking a feast), Declan and David for printing the fliers and all the advertising stuff ,Niall for doing the door,Daniel/Jessica/Paul / Stina / Malin / Madde for doing trojan work cleaning and washing up & Eoin for co-ordinating the musicians.It was a great night so much so that the Portugese club want us to do an end-of-year party as well ( Halloween or something)Might be a nice tie in with a successful 2013 season .... anyway , thanks again .
Now the fun stuff is over, the serious stuff begins.We have around 8 weeks to Malmo.We have to start coming together more.Attendance has been truly awful.The indoor training day does nt suit everybody but nothing we can do about that now.With this long winter, we may not even get to an outside pitch until May so we have to put it in now.
Training is booked for next Saturday 23rd March in Valhamra but I think we should have an additional session Thursday 21 st at 7pm -  either in Slottskogen or Skatas.( interval session so we can get some cardio done.Please indicate your location preference by texting me ( 0723704037 ) or replying to this mail.
We have to start putting it in - sure the other teams are doing more than we are,......
As a member of ECB , I have been asked to sit on a steering commitee to implement a 5 year vision plan for European GAA and where it wants to be in 5 years.With emigration so prevalent now and clubs popping over all over the place, its more imperative that European GAA stays strong , viable and self-supportive.To this end, they are asking all grass roots players to think about where they want European GAA to be in 5 years and what their concerns are and how they will be addressed and fixed.A forum / questionnaire will be sent out soon but in the meantime , start thinking about where you want European GAA to go and what you would like different or the same ....
Referee Training Courses 2013
Dear club officer,
Refereeing is an excellent way of staying involved in Gaelic games and contributing to the growth of Gaelic games in Europe.
Please bring this mail to the attention of:
1. all club members - especially those who have finished playing or are approaching the end of their playing days!
2. people who have been involved in playing in the past but may not have been in touch for a while
3. current players, who are prepared to commit extra weekends to refereeing outside of their playing commitments
Refereeing in Europe
The European Board strives to be self-sufficient and requires a panel of qualified referees to officiate at games (football, hurling, ladies football and camogie) across the continent. Without referees, no games can take place, and our existing panel of referees barely managed to cover all fixtures last year. Indeed as the number of teams grows, so will the number of referees required.
We are also aware of the need to reduce the workload of referees at tournaments as we cannot expect a referee to be consistent and of a standard players expect if s/he has too many games on the day. Ideally a referee should not have to referee for more than 2-3 hours on one day but many of our referees frequently exceed this amount.
The European Board now has a team of recently qualified Referee Tutors who have been trained by top referees in the GAA and LGFA. In addition, we also have a team of mentors/assessors to support current and new referees and help to improve standards over time.
Initially, we try to appoint new referees to officiate at tournaments alongside experienced referees who can act as "mentors". Referees are normally appointed to tournaments based on expressing their interest in particular venues (often in their own region) and dates. Referees move on to refereeing outside their own region and depending upon progress may eventually be appointed to Pan-European Championships subject to assessment reports and gradings.
Referee travel costs are refunded (subject to certain limits) and they may also bring partners (travel expenses not covered) as host clubs are responsible for providing accommodation where necessary along with meals etc.
New Referees Training Courses
We will shortly be organising a number of training courses for new referees, which will also act as in-service "refresher" courses for existing referees (referees must attend such a "refresher" course every few years).
The courses will be organised in March/early April and we are now seeking expressions of interest from those who would like to referee and can commit to refereeing at least three tournaments per year (in order to ensure value for money and as you will need to referee regularly to improve)
Depending upon interest, it is hoped to organise courses as follows:-
1. Spain - aimed at recruiting referees for the Iberian region and in Galicia
2. France - a French language course for referees all areas of France
3. Benelux/or other location (dependent on applicants) - general course for all those in other regions
Each course will cover all codes over a weekend. Commencing with an Introduction on Friday night, common elements (all codes) on Saturday morning, GAA course on Saturday afternoon and LGFA on Sunday morning with a brief rules & short fitness test at the end.
The Board will meet reasonable travel expenses (refunded after a referee officiates at a specified number of tournaments), accommodation and meals and supply training materials and a referee starter pack of rules books, cards, whistle etc.
No commitment is required at this stage, just an expression of interest, and all you have to do is fill in this short form, simply click on this link:-
NB: Existing referees should also complete this form indicating when they attended their last referee training under the heading "Experience"
Yours in sport,
Tony
